Turn down the noise
First, let’s turn down the noise.
There is a lot of money advice out there. I don’t want to add to the feeling that you should already have everything figured out. We can start with what is in front of you.

The cover of the Playbook.
There’s no shame and no rush here. We’ll take it one decision at a time.
A LITTLE CONVERSATION
Before we get to everything in the pack, this is how I’d like us to approach it.
One clear step is enough to begin.
Turn down the noise
There is a lot of money advice out there. I don’t want to add to the feeling that you should already have everything figured out. We can start with what is in front of you.
Know your numbers
We’ll put a few real costs on the page. No guessing what everybody else is doing. Just your money, your priorities and one decision you want to understand better.
Build your rhythm
Maybe that’s a ten-minute check-in on Sunday, or one question you finally ask your card company. Small, repeatable steps are the kind of progress I want the book and tools to help you make.
A free two-minute check-up
Eight quick questions. There are no wrong answers, and nothing you choose leaves this page. At the end you get a short plan and the chapters to start with.

What you’ll get
What you get
Each chapter takes one ordinary money decision and works it through: why it matters, what it costs, what to say and what to do next. Then you bring it back to your own numbers in the workbook.

FROM A CHARGE TO A CHOICE
A phone plan is familiar. The useful part is learning how to work through the choice, and what to do with the answer.
Chapter 2 helps you review the charges you stopped noticing. Keep what earns its place. Compare what could cost less. Check the terms before you cancel.
Read the chapter excerpt →This is the No Longer Worth It tab from the workbook. Its starter phone plan compares $85 with $35: a modeled $50 a month, or $600 across a year.
See the workbook tab ↗Illustrative comparison. Twelve unchanged monthly payments; excludes switching fees. A result is not money saved until the payment actually changes. Your inputs stay on this page.
Use the free Leak Hunt with more costs →FROM THE BOOK
Chapter 1 starts with what you already own and what it keeps costing you, then moves on to getting every debt onto one page. Read the opening pages before you decide.
Read the chapter excerptAn excerpt from Chapter 1, shown as easy reading text. The designed page layout is in the book files.
Jess and Tanya are composite characters. Their stories draw on real situations people have shared, with names and details changed. They teach the approach and are not customer testimonials or promises of results.
The examples show how the reasoning changes with different circumstances. Your own numbers belong in the workbook.
EVERYTHING COSTS TWICE
“I’m paying rent for my ex’s couch.”
Jess, Chapter 1 · composite teaching character
There's a moment I watch happen to almost everyone who gets serious about money. They stop looking at their bank account for the answer and start looking around the room they are sitting in.
Most of us were taught that money leaves when we buy something. You pay, the receipt prints, the transaction is over. That's only half the story. Everything you own keeps charging you after you bring it home. It takes up space you pay rent on. It needs cleaning, fixing, insuring, storing and eventually throwing away. And every dollar sitting inside it is a dollar that is not growing anywhere else.
Everything you own costs money twice: once when you buy it, and again for as long as you keep it.
LET’S OPEN THE CHAPTERS
Pick a chapter that catches your eye. I’ll show you the question we’ll work through together.
Chapter 01 of 12
What are the things you already own still costing you? Price your space, run the replacement test, and get every debt onto one page.
ONE USEFUL FIRST STEP
List three things you would not buy again.
In the kit: Costs Twice; Net Worth
There is a place to begin, wherever you are.
MAKE A LITTLE ROOM FOR YOUR LIFE
The main worked examples follow tight budgets. Each chapter also adapts that month for higher earners, couples and families, readers 50 and over, and irregular incomes, and the calculators use your own numbers.
Your situation can change. You can return to a different part of the book when it does.
Start with the essentials and adapt each month to the room you have in your budget.

LET’S TRY SOMETHING SMALL
Tap the costs you pay for, then change the amounts to match your own bills. You’ll see what they add up to in a year, and decide what to keep, ask about or cancel.

Tap what you pay for Starting amounts are only examples.
Your list
Example list to start with. Tap any cost to add or remove it, and change the amounts to match your bills.
Amounts to look at, not a promise of savings.

You can follow the year in order, or begin with the decision that feels closest to home.

A note from Alicia
If you leave this page with one cost written down or one question you feel ready to ask, that is a useful start. I want the Playbook to feel like that too: a calm conversation, with something practical to do next.

Before you begin
Start with the free Money Check-up or the Chapter 1 excerpt on this page. In the pack, the Quick Start gives you seven short first steps, each tied to a chapter.
Debt runs through several chapters. They cover listing every debt, asking for a lower rate, choosing a payoff order and handling medical bills. They also explain how nonprofit credit counseling differs from debt settlement. The material is educational and doesn’t replace advice about your own circumstances.
No. The workbook is an Excel file (.xlsx) that also opens in Apple Numbers, and the download includes a Google Sheets version you can copy into your own free Google account. You type only in the yellow cells, and the first tab walks you through it. The book and printables need no spreadsheet software at all.
The main examples work through tight budgets. Each chapter also includes adaptations for higher earners, couples and families, readers 50 and over, and irregular income. Use the calculators with your own numbers.
The videos explore one idea at a time. The book stays with each decision long enough to work it through: the reasoning, the math, the scripts and a version for your situation. Two worked examples carry the year from January to December. You can read the start of Chapter 1 here first.
Checkout runs through Lemon Squeezy, which handles the payment, any sales tax and your receipt. After one payment of $27, you can download the files straight away, and your email receipt includes the download link.

On How I Built a Full Year of Emergency Savings on a $30,000 Salary (The Exact System)
Hello Alicia. I’m commenting from Lagos, Nigeria. I’ve been binge-watching most of your videos and would like to tell you that they have been very helpful and impactful. I’m halfway through the mark and very confident that before the year runs out, I will have reached the finish line. When you said that “idle money” helps you create calm, steadiness and a spine, I felt it. I hollered because that’s what’s happening to me too. I have become much more disciplined with my finances that my friends have set up a speaking engagement this month for me to come talk about it. I’m excited to share all I’ve learnt and looking forward to it. IMAGINE ME!! Your work on here is relevant. Please don’t stop and God bless you real good.

On What You Should Have Accomplished by 40 | How to Catch Up Fast
Really appreciate this video. It helped me realize I’m currently doing better than I thought, even when it feels like I’m behind. It also helped me reframe how I feel about my past choices between the ages of 18 and 30 (The guilt is real!). Many of those choices were about survival, limited financial literacy, and earning power while putting myself through college and paying rent, not failure (i.e., depending on credit cards to buy groceries and other necessities)! Also, thank you for making the point about not comparing finances and lifestyles with others who appear to be better off than you- so true!

I appreciate this video! I asked and you delivered. Everything you put into perspective is true. I identify in several places in this video. One more request, what about civil/government employees who can’t rely on social security? What would you recommend for someone in their 40s just starting to invest and play catch up to achieve a retirement goal by 60-65.

Alicia, I binge watched your videos on my days off and took notes. You really encouraged me to change my mindset about where my money goes with the daily saving video in particular. I used to put away several hundred dollars only to reverse and pull from savings when I fell short. I appreciate you making personal finance easier to get.

On 25 Great Depression Money Habits That Still Build Wealth (Most People Have Forgotten These!)
I recently called a repairman to service my refrigerator instead of running out to buy another refrigerator. Its sealant was replaced. It should be another 10 years before anything else happens. Plus I asked a lot of questions about appliances they repair often so he told me what not to buy. 👍🏾 This was due to me watching your videos. Plus just planted a few vegetables yesterday. I’m still wearing my scrubs I bought 6 years ago when I started this job.

On Schools Failed You on Money: 10 Money Rules They Failed to Teach You!
I think that you, Alicia, should make a series of financial lesson videos for students, from basic lessons for elementary and middle school students on wants vs. needs, etc., to more advanced lessons for high schoolers, and especially for young people about to launch into the world of work or college. You explain and illustrate things so clearly for adults. A step by step curriculum for young people would be something I would love to share with people in my life. BTW, I was a teacher before I retired, and the best teachers always shared life lessons with students, no matter which subjects we taught.

On It's IMPOSSIBLE to Stay Broke If You Do THIS Everyday In 2026 (Step by Step)
Am genuinely grateful for this video! My job is new but I have the ability to get pay-rises as I train in each area, every 3-6 months. I work split shifts on a 3-wk rotation so will plan my money minute to align with my wakeup times, also my pay-cycle is bi-weekly but I do get a small weekly side income which I can use for my daily. Will be starting small and increasing as I can, it’s not the amount at first it’s building the habits and growing self-awareness towards my spending. Thank you so much!
